Note:This thesis is concerned with the behaviour of fixed joints in relation to their influence on the thermal deformation of machine tool structures, an aspect which has never been considered before. The recognition of the role of the contact pressure distribution led to the development and formulation of a theory on the nonlinearThermo elastic behaviour of the joint. This behaviour results in a time-dependent closed loop interaction at the joint, between the ithermal field and the deformation of contacting elements.
