Analysis of healing and integrity of a colon anastomosis after rotation: an experimental study in rabbits

Organic effects of a 180 degrees colon rotation followed by colon anastomosis were evaluated in rabbits (n = 16). The colon was rotated onto its longitudinal axis and the effect of the rotation on the healing and integrity of the anastomosis were studied. The animals were controlled post-operatively and they were autopsied on the 7th post-operative day. The anastomosis was excised and macroscopic and microscopic features of the healing process was studied, as well as intramural neurons histometry. The animals showed no complications due to anastomosis and did well in the post-operative period. Their weight did not vary during the experiment. Anastomotic healing was normal and comparable in both groups.
