Needs of families of adolescents with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder

The purpose of this study was to identify the unmet service needs of adolescents with autism spectrum disorders in Western Australia and their impact on their families. Participants were 21 families with adolescents aged 12 to 20 years. Parenting stress was measured using the Stress Index for Parents of Adolescents (SIPA), adolescent adaptive behaviour profiles were measured using the Adaptive Behavior Assessment System (ABAS II). A Needs Questionnaire constructed for this study assessed for parent perceived unmet service needs. Results indicated a number of significant parent perceived gaps in the availability and accessibility of services for adolescents in Western Australia, particularly for those in country areas. Parental stress levels were related to perceived life restrictions, adolescent antisocial/delinquent behaviours, and relationship with spouse/partner. The implications of impoverished services for adolescents with ASD, particularly in country WA, and their effects on families are described, and recommendations are made for their improvement
