International audienceM. Aurelius Cotta Maximus Messallinus came from one of the most prestigious families of Rome, the patrician gens of the Valerii. He was the youngest son of Messalla Corvinus (cos. 31), a figure symbolic of the triumvirat period and the emergence of the Principat. Cotta had another symbolic heritage, since he was adopted by a member of the plebeian nobilitas, Aurelius Cotta. This nobilis is thus strongly marked by a Republican culture, but existed in the Julio-Claudian era. This investigation looks at the identifying features of the nobility of this figure, and its evolution in relation to the Republican era.
