Optimum Design of Simply Supported Plate Girder Bridge

This study applied the new criteria specified in the ???Basic Concepts of Korean Highway Bridge Design Code: Limit State Design (2016)??? to the steel bridge design. Applying the load obtained by the MIDAS to the structure, several key characteristics of a simply-supported bridge. Such as the shear bending strength, the flexural strength, and the shearing strength of the bridge girder, the nominal flexural strength and the nominal flexural resistance in the web plate, and the load-induced and the deformation-induced fatigue, were checked by the ultimate limit status review, service limit status review, constructability review, and fatigue limit state review. Meanwhile, when designing a bridge, the selection of the cross-sections of the members, which is aim at reducing the self-weight and the construction cost of the bridge, is only based on the designer's knowledge and experience. However, this approach is quite subjective and can not obtain a consistent combination of the cross-sections of the members from different designers. In this study, the new criteria to select the optimized cross-sections of the members is applied to a simply-supported girder bridge in a construction site. Not only the safety of the bridge, but also the economic efficiency and the difficulty of the construction are considered. Key Word: Limit State Design, Simply-Supported, Steel BridgeMaste
