Understanding Spatial Dependence and Using Spatial Regression Analysis

We introduce the spatial regression analysis which incorporates the spatial dependence induced by intergovernmental interaction in the regression model. Following the logical procedures of the spatial regression analysis, we introduce criteria for structuring spatial dependence and constructing the spatial weight matrix, methods for testing spatial dependence, procedures for selecting proper spatial regression models, and methods for selecting proper estimation methods. We also provide the results of a case study in which we applied the procedures and techniques of the spatial regression analysis to the local birth subsidy policy. The results of the study show that, in searching for the proper spatial weight matrix, the proper spatial regression model, and the proper estimation method, we need to consider comprehensively theories, various selecting criteria and techniques based on statistics, and estimation results of alternative spatial regression models
