Film Education for the Activation of the Five Senses

Modern aesthetics pursues the aesthetics of five senses. The aesthetics of the five senses is expanding the possibility of communication through art. The film as the symbol of modern art can be the best media and text with which we can activate the five senses. This study is an attempt to resolve the problem of the division of cognition and emotion and address visual biases in the educational field by film experiences.From these viewpoints, film education is designed as education about the film as well as education through the film. Characteristics of films are reviewed from various perspectives, and then, on this basis, various learning activities (film appreciation, filmmaking, film use) are designed and implemented. The participants were 18 students enrolled in the “Christian Education and Film” class at college P in Seoul. The effects of film education is compared and examined by quantifying the film-efficacy and the connoisseurship of the learners and the teacher on microteaching through films.According to the results, averages by factors of film-efficacy are in order, critical perception (M=4.44, SD=.31), reflective use (M=4.11, SD=.40), and creative expression (M=3.96, SD=.53). With regard to evaluation of the learners and the teacher on microteaching through films, it revealed no significant differences between the averages of the learners and the teacher. This can be considered to be a result from the learners’ connoisseurship having reached the same level as the teacher’s, but the results can hardly be understood as in causality or generalized because of the limitation of the research design.
