Isolation and Identification of Enteric Bacteria in Different Street Vended Foods Collected from Different Private Universities in Dhaka City

This thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) in East West University, Dhaka, Bangladesh.The objective of thisstudy was toisolate andidentify the presence of enteric bacteria (Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Shigella spp, Salmonella spp and Vibrio spp) in different street vended foods collected from different private universities in Dhaka city. Thirty food samples were collected from fixed and mobile vendors fromarea around10 private universities in Dhaka city. The tested samples werejhal-muri, fuchka, vhel-puri, panipuri, bun, cake, danish, chola, peaju, sweet, sheek-kabab,laddu, singara, somucha etc. Sterile polythene bags were used to collect 3 different samples from each university. They were tested for the presence of microorganisms following conventional microbiological processes. Biochemical tests were done for the confirmation of Escherichia coli, Klebsiella spp, Shigella spp, Salmonella and Vibrio spp. Out of 30 food samples, eight (43%) were suspected to contain Klebsiella spp, three (27%)were suspected to contain Escherichia coli, one (3%) wassuspected to contain Shigella spp and one (3%) wassuspected to contain Vibrio spp. All theseenteric pathogens could be the potentialcause for food-borne illnesses and provision of education to the vendors would improve quality of street foods
