East, west and in-between; Pass it on

East, West and In-Between If art is a reflection of the creator, then Wong’s work is a visual collage of influences from East and West. She is interested in creating works where, within one piece, both cultures converse with one another not only through their traditions of material, form and craftsmanship, but also through their original cultural contexts. Her current work elaborates the local culture and craft traditions of Chinese pottery with a modernist and contemporary sense of design. Pass It On Clay, a material full of possibilities, is best to describe a class of uninitiated ceramics learners in the 2017 Fall Artists-in-Residence Studio Practice Course. After a semester of experiments with different techniques, students came to realize their imaginations beyond materials and skills, from functional to sculptural pieces in which they freely expressed their ideas, concept, and moods. We are pleased to present our creative outcomes and highlights of the art marking process from the initial concept to completion. Pass it On is about the processes, exchanges, and stories of students\u27 experiences with clay. Our focus is on the exchange with gallery visitors and the campus community. Demonstration & Ceramics Experience Workshop, which is led by the students, showcases how they apply their knowledge and understanding towards the medium to practice through peer teaching. Visual Boards, attached to the individual artworks, allow audiences to explore the interesting and de-stressing process of making ceramics.
