GENDER DISCRIMINATION EXPERIENCED BY MALE DANCERS

This study focuses on discrimination and causes of discrimination on male dancers in Ballroom dance. It is done to determine the causes of discrimination experienced by dancers, especially male dancers. The writer uses an interview method consisting of 9 questions with the content of knowing why they (male dancers) choose to be dancers, what they feel during being a dancer, and discrimination they experienced during dancing. The data was analyzed by using the way of translating and inputting as a proof. Initial questions from 1-3 are about why they become dancers as well as what and how they feel during their profession as dancers. Questions 4-8 are about the responses and supports from friends and family, and what discrimination they experienced during becoming dancers. Meanwhile question number 9 or the last is why they are still doing their profession as dancers if they had ever experienced discrimination. The participants of the interview were 5 male dancers in the field of ballroom dance. Based on qualitative data analysis, it can be concluded that most of the speakers choose to be dancers because of their passion, and also they have experienced with discrimination as long as they become a dancer, both in words and physically. However, they continue their profession as dancers because they already regard it as their passion
