Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, Purdue University, West Lafayette, IN 47907-2084In seeking to understand the thermal and photochemical pathways that lead to naphthalene, it is important to consider the C$_1$$_0$H$_8$ potential energy surface as a whole, since facile routes could involve formation of a C$_1$$_0$H$_8$ isomer followed by isomerization to naphthalene. 1-phenyl-1-buten-3-yne is a structural isomer of naphthalene, which is known to isomerize to naphthalene when heated. It is a likely product of phenyl radical reaction with vinylacetylene, and has been identified as one of the C$_1$$_0$H$_8$ products formed from ultraviolet photochemistry of diacetylene with styrene.
