A proton hop from {\em para}-H$_3^+$ to {\em para}-H$_2$ maintains the {\em para}-H$_3^+$, but a hydrogen exchange reaction can produce {\em ortho}-H$_3^+$. In the hopes of developing a source of H$_3^+$ that is almost entirely in a single quantum state ($J=K=1$), we have investigated a supersonically expanding plasma using a pulsed discharge nozzle with pure {\em para}-H$_2$ as a precursor gas. ...
