This paper develops a conceptual framework for the analysis of the connections between monetary policy and financial repression and applies it to the Dominican Republic. The consequences of financial regulation on the structure of the market and the degrees of competition and institutional concentration are examined and measured. The paper recommends the elimination of the specialization of financial institutions and the explicit prudential supervision of the financial groups. Fewer, less specialized banks appear to be a more efficient structure for the financial system of the Dominican Republic
