Neuroscientific teaching program for the meaningful learning of genetics

Acompanha: Produto educacional: Jogo das três pistas: uma proposta lúdica para a avaliação dos subsunçores de genéticaThe present study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of a Neuroscientific Teaching Program (PNE) for the meaningful learning of Genetics in High School. The study was developed during the second semester of 2015, in the Genetics classes, the integral content of Biology discipline. Participated in the present research the teacher responsible for the discipline and 63 students from the 3rd year of high school, during morning classes of a public school in a city located in the Southern Center of Paraná State. The intervention process was divided into three main stages: Initial Evaluation, PNE Application, and Final Evaluation. During the initial evaluation, students answered an questionnaire developed by Paiva and Martins (2005) to evaluate the students' prior knowledge about some Genetics themes, the Learning Approach Questionnaire (CAVALLO; SCHAFER, 1994) and the Motivation Assessment Scale for Learning (EMAPRE) (ZENORINI, 2007). For PNE application, the students of the classes were allocated into two groups: Control Group (CT) and Intervention Group (GI). The CT received the contents of traditional form. The GI was submitted to PNE, composed of several educational strategies and resources aiming to stimulate the students’ cognitive functions, emotions, and social interaction. During the final evaluation, students’ genetic knowledge was examined by the following instruments: Two-Tier Genetics Concepts Test (KILIÇ; SAGLAM, 2009) and Two-tier Diagnostic Instrument for Genetics (TSUI; TREAGUST, 2010). Also, a brief cognitive evaluation was also performed with the D2 Test of Attention (BRICKENKAMP, 2000) and the Abstract Reasoning Test, one of the subtests of the Battery of Reasoning Tests (BPR-5) (ALMEIDA; PRIMI, 2015). The results showed both groups had little previous knowledge about general topics in the area of Genetics, especially the concept and relations between DNA, gene and chromosomes. The CT students presented more coherent and elaborate previous knowledge, as well as greater interest in biological contents, motivation for learning and inclination for meaningful learning than GI students. However, these features did not imply better results in the final tests that evaluated the knowledge of Genetics. In fact, genetic knowledge tests demonstrated the majority of students in both groups had little knowledge of Molecular and Mendelian Genetics. The cognitive assessment also revealed difficulties in the ability to concentrate attention and abstract reasoning. Despite the limitations found in the development of this work, it may be concluded that PNE was effective for some GI students, particularly those who showed, in initial tests, orientation for meaningful learning and inclination towards the “performance-avoidance” goal, which literature states to be linked to low performance and dedication. In this way, the general hypothesis of this research was corroborated, that is to say, the students exposed to PNE presented better results in the final Genetics tests when compared to the students who were not in contact with the program. However, it is important to highlight that other studies must be conducted with different populations of students and with other content addressed.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)Este estudo teve como objetivo geral avaliar a eficiência de um Programa Neurocientífico de Ensino (PNE) para a aprendizagem significativa de Genética no Ensino Médio. O estudo foi desenvolvido durante todo o segundo semestre de 2015, nas aulas de Genética, conteúdo integrante da disciplina de Biologia. Participaram da pesquisa o professor responsável pela disciplina e 63 alunos do 3º ano do ensino médio, período da manhã, de uma escola pública de uma cidade do Centro Sul do Paraná. O processo de intervenção foi dividido em três grandes etapas: Avaliação Inicial, Aplicação do PNE e Avaliação Final. Durante a avaliação inicial, os alunos responderam a um questionário construído por Paiva e Martins (2005) para avaliar os seus conhecimentos prévios de Genética, o Questionário sobre Estilos de Aprendizagem (CAVALLO; SCHAFER, 1994) e a Escala de Avaliação da Motivação para Aprendizagem (EMAPRE) de Zenorini (2007). Para a aplicação do PNE, as turmas foram divididas em dois grupos: Grupo Controle (GC) e Grupo Intervenção (GI). O GC recebeu os conteúdos de forma tradicional e o GI foi submetido ao PNE composto por diversas estratégias e recursos didáticos que visaram estimular as funções cognitivas, as emoções e a interação social. Durante a avaliação final, foi realizada uma avaliação do conhecimento de genética com os seguintes instrumentos: Teste Dupla-Camada de Conceitos de Genética (KILIÇ; SAGLAM, 2009) e Teste Dupla-Camada para o Diagnóstico de Genética (TSUI; TREAGUST, 2010). Na avaliação final também foi empregada uma breve avaliação cognitiva com o teste D2 de atenção (BRICKENKAMP, 2000) e com a Prova de Raciocínio Abstrato, um dos subtestes da Bateria de Provas de Raciocínio (BPR-5) (ALMEIDA; PRIMI, 2015). Os resultados mostraram que ambos os grupos apresentaram poucos conhecimentos prévios sobre temas gerais da área de Genética, especialmente do conceito e das relações entre DNA, gene e cromossomos. Os alunos do GC apresentaram subsunçores mais coerentes e elaborados, além de maior interesse por conteúdos biológicos, motivação para a aprendizagem e inclinação para aprendizagem significativa do que os alunos do GI, porém isso não implicou em resultados melhores nos testes finais que avaliaram o conhecimento de Genética. Na realidade, os testes de conhecimento de Genética mostraram que a maioria dos alunos de ambos os grupos apresentaram pouco conhecimento de Genética Molecular e Mendeliana. A avaliação cognitiva também revelou dificuldades na capacidade de atenção concentrada e raciocínio abstrato. Apesar das limitações encontradas no desenvolvimento deste trabalho, pode-se concluir que o PNE foi efetivo para alguns alunos integrantes do GI, particularmente aqueles que demonstraram nos testes iniciais orientação para a aprendizagem significativa e inclinação para a meta performance-evitação cuja literatura diz estar ligada ao baixo desempenho e dedicação. Desta forma, corrobora-se a hipótese geral desta pesquisa, ou seja, que os alunos expostos ao PNE apresentaram melhores resultados nos testes finais de Genética quando comparados aos alunos que não estiveram em contato com o programa. Contudo, ressalta-se que outros estudos deverão ser conduzidos com diferentes populações de alunos e com outros conteúdos abordados
