Which words may be spoken and which pictures may be shown? : A study of music teachers normative awareness conserning choises of lyrics and music videos.

This study aims at examining how music teachers perceive gender norms in music videos and song lyrics as well as how or if the teacher successively incorporates this into the education happening in the classroom. In other words, this study investigates further methods that music teachers use in terms of selection, as to which teaching materials may be included in the lesson, and how the teachers actually use the material. In order to collect the reflections that music teachers make about gender norms a questionnaire has been used in order to gather data. Surveys are usually quantitative, but when the questions in the questionnaire gave a chance at reflection, it was possible to do a qualitative study without the survey being shallow. The questionnaire in itself was performed in conjunction with three different music videos and their coupled lyrics in order to portray distinct differences in differing situations. The results of this study are subjective in the sense that no people are alike in thoughts and opinion, but the general concensus among the music teachers is that there is a clear misogynistic undertone in all videos although they are varied in their respective degree of gender norms. Therefore, this essay also investigates what material music teachers choose and how they use it in the classroom
