Effect of Methanol Extract Hearhleaf Madeiravine (Anredera Cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) Leaves on Blood Sugar in Diabetes Mellitus Model Mice

Heartleaf madeiravine (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) leaves, traditionally, are used to treat various diseases including to decrease blood glucose level.Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of heartleaf madeiravine leaves extract in lowering blood glucose level and in repairing a damage of -pancreas cells. Methods : This experimental research uses Swiss Webster mice The extract was tested on diabetic Swiss Webster mice induced by alloxan at a dose of 70 mg/kg bw intravenously . Doses used for treating these mice were 50 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw orally for 14 days .Blood glucose level of the mice were measured after 7 and 14 days administration of the extract. The pancreas cell of treated mice were observed histologicaly on day 14. Result: The research showed that the methanol extract of heartleaf madeiravine leaves at a dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg bw could lower blood glucose level significantly different compared to control group (p<0.05) either on day 7 or on day 14 and increased the number and repaired the damage of - pancreas cell. Conclusion: Methanol extract of heartleaf madeiravine leaves can be used to treat diabetes mellitus induced by alloxan in mice
