Research of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity in Mistletoe (Viscum album L.) herb.

Object and methods: on different host trees and in different locations growing Viscum album L. herb. The quantitative and qualitative composition of phenolic acids is determined using high-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis method. A total amount of phenolics compounds is determined by Folin-Ciocalteu method. Antioxidant activity was assessed using CUPRAC spectrophotometric method. The aim: to investigate qualitative, quantitative composition and its variance of phenolic acids in mistletoe (Viscum album L.) herb handpicked from various trees and dried in different methods, using high-performance thin-layer chromatography method and to evaluate the amount of total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity of extracts. The objective of the Study: to evaluate a quantitative and qualitative composition of phenolic acids in mistletoe herb using the HPTLC analysis method. To determine the amount of total phenolic compounds in herb of V. album L., dried in two different ways and evaluate changes in the dynamics. Determine variation and drying method effect on the antioxidant activity of mistletoe ethanolic extracts by using CUPRAC method. Evaluate correlation between quantities of phenolic acids and total phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Results and conclusions: Phenolic acid – chlorogenic acid was identified in all V. album L. samples and was quantified in herb dried naturally in the air (0,319-1,096 mg/g). A total amount of phenolic compounds in V. album L. samples varies 13,23-18,29 mg/g. Antioxidant activity varies 65,66-168,25 mg/g. Increased antioxidant activity and the amount of total phenolic compounds were determined in naturally dried raw material in comparison with raw material dried at 60 C temperature. The mistletoe hosted by Malus L., in Doškonys, Alytus region proved to be the richest in chlorogenic acid, total amount of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity (1,0960,012 mg/g, 18,290,33 mg/g, 168,250,69 mg/g accordingly).
