Dense SiC - TiB2 composites (5, 10 and 15% vol TiB2) were developed by natural and reactive sintering from TiO2, B4C, and phenolic resin as a carbon source, depending on the reaction (which takes place at 1400c):TiO2 + 0.5 B4C + 1.5 C SiC / TiB2 + 2 CO.They have been characterized from a microstructural, mechanical and finally tribological point of view. The dispersion of TiB2 particles was found to be very homogeneous, both in optical microscopy and in scanning electron microscopy. The image analysis showed that a majority of particles at a size smaller than 1 m.
