Preliminary design of a 15m, round the world cruiser.

This paper outlines a preliminary design of a 15m round the world sailing yacht, aimed at an amateur couple. The paper attempted to address as many areas of the design as possible, ranging from initial hull design to interior design, to a possible structural layout. At all times the project had an eye to compliance with modern rules and regulations and attempted to cast a common sense eye over all portions. The design utilised market research and data from previous designs, as well as general naval architecture knowledge as a basis for the new yacht. During the design process an attempt was made to break away from the normal and mediocre, and utilise novel ideas, some new, and some transferred from other applications. The final design is aimed to be an easily constructed, easily repaired vessel; where no frill meets comfort, and is highly commercially viable. This was achieved by utilising a chined aluminium construction, a yawl sailplan, and focusing on large open spaces throughout the yacht. A large yet sleek glass superstructure gives the yacht a unique visual and aesthetic.
