Are all nomads the same? : A comparative study of the image of the sami and non-european nomads in textbooks between 1868-1954

Denna undersökning syftar till att undersöka bilden av de nomadiska samerna så som den framstår i ett urval av svenska läroböcker tryckta mellan 1868-1958 och jämföra den bilden med en mer allmän bild av utomeuropeiska nomader. För att uppnå detta syfte utgår undersökningen från Kenneth Nygrens bildbegrepp som innebär att alla beskrivningar och värderingar som förmedlas i materialet, det stereotypa och enkla och det nyanserade och komplexa, betraktas för att synliggöra en mer fullständig bild av samerna i svenska läroböcker. Exempel är hur familjerelationer beskrivs, vilka egenskaper folket tillskrivs och deras relation till andra folk-, och till naturen. Genom att jämföra flera bilder över en längre tidsperiod kan förändringen i synen på samerna intill grundskolans införande synliggöras. Bilden av de nomadiska samerna jämförs med den av de utomeuropeiska nomaderna för att tydligare belysa vilka likheter och skillnader som finns mellan bilderna. Resultatet av undersökningen visar att46det finns några gemensamma element som står sig stadigt över tid. Men bilden av samerna framstår i ett fredligare, och trevligare ljus, samt att bilden av samerna också är mer nyanserad.This study aims to show how the image of the Sami has changed during 1868-1954 by studying what Swedish textbooks have highlighted about the Sami. Furthermore, this study compares the image of the Sami to the image of Non-European nomads to show the relationship between these images but also how they change during the period. The study uses the theory of image that Kenneth Nyberg formulates in his thesis. Every description and valuation in the textbooks are considered, the stereotypical and elementary as well as the elaborated and complex. Specific descriptions and valuations that are highly valued are those concerning, family relations, characteristics, relations with other cultures, and the relation with nature. The result of this study shows that the image of the Sami and of the Non-European nomads have similarities between each other that are lasting over time. The study also shows that the image of the Sami is more elaborated and that they are portrayed in a friendlier way than Non-European nomads
