Yaşa bağlı makula dejenerasyonu (YBMD), özellikle gelişmiş ülkelerdeki geri dönüşümsüz görme kaybının en önemli nedenidir. YBMD gelişimindeki en önemli risk faktörü ileri yaştır. CFH genindeki rs1061170 polimorfizminin YBMD gelişimi açısından bağımsız bir risk faktörü olduğu gösterilmiştir.
