The study is based on 15 taxa, 13 species and 2 varieties of I.tectorum Maximum, I.variegata Linn, I.varigata hybrid, I Flavescence D C, I.pallida Lamarck, I.xiphium Linn and I.albicans lange recorded for the first time from the state. The chromosome counts are determined for 200 species and a large number of varieties of the genus Iris. The data available on the cytology of Iris largely deal with the somatic process (complement) and only limited work data is available on the behavior of chromosomes during meiosis is studied in very few Irises. Chromosome complements of various taxa investigated has little in common with one another. It is reported that number of median, sub-median and sub terminal chromosomes varies from species to species
