Studies on the ovarian cycles of Kashmir fishes Schizothorax niger Heckel and Botia Birdi Chandry with observations on nucleolar extrusions and problem of corpus luteum in fishes.

The work studies the morphology, seasonal variations in the ovaries; the nuclear change and vitellogenesis; the microscopic seasonal variations in the ovaries in the fishes. The study contains information about spawning season of Schizothorax Niger (from April to May) and of Botia birdi (from 15th August to 15th September).It studied the increase in weight and volume of ovaries of Botia birdi and growth in ovaries of Schizothorax Niger. The germinal epithelium associated with the production of Oocytes is also studied. The sub germinal tunica albuginea, stroma, interstitial cells, cell membrane, vitelline membrane, theca, cytoplasm, nucleolar extrusions and corpus luteum are discussed. The observation and conclusion elaborated in the thesis contain results pertaining to the breeding season
