The wide variability in two essential soil forming factors – soil & climate, in temperate region is because of variation in physiographic factors like slope, relief & altitude. On the basis of physiography the soils of Kashmir valley have been locally categorized into high attitude, mid altitude (karewa) and low altitude. The mid altitude karewa soils are the Pleistocene and Post- Pleistocene deposits of lacustrine origin with an altitude of 1600-1800 m amsl. The occurrence of diverse soils on these landforms necessitates their characterization, classification, genesis and micro-nutrient distribution, to understand their potential problems and to make use of such information for land resource management.
