The main goal of this research is to develop a miniaturized diagnostic equipment in order to identify some volatile organic compounds present in exhaled breath and referred as lung cancer biomarkers. The main scientific and technical obstacles of this project are linked to the very low concentrations of these chemical compounds and the presence of high concentrations of H2O and CO2 naturally present in exhaled breath. To address these issues, we suggest to use a SnO2-based gas sensor combined with a micro-preconcentrator and a chromatographic micro-column in order to engineer a low detection limit system.
