El caso que se presenta en esta investigación arroja luz sobre qué aprendizajes conceptuales ocurren (o no) durante la actividad de resolver problemas. El caso está acotado a tres estudiantes que resuelven tres problemas de hidrostática y a la actividad cognitiva que acontece en torno al concepto de empuje durante esas tres instancias de resolución. La Teoría de Clases de Coordinación desarrollada por diSessa y Wagner (2005) permite entender cómo y cuándo estos estudiantes realizan progresos conceptuales a partir de ciertas dificultades encontradas durante el proceso de resolución.
