Reproductive biology of four hexaploid South American species of Andropogon L. (Gramineae: Andropogoneae)

Se presentan los números cromosómicos y la biología reproductiva de cuatro especies sudamericanas hexaploides (2n = 6x = 60) del género Andropogon. Las especies estudiadas pertenecen a la sect. Leptopogon Stapf (A. glaziovii Hack. y A. arenarius Hack.) y Notosolen Stapf (Andropogon sp. y A. glaucophyllus Roseng., B. R. Arrill. & Izag.). Este es el primer recuento cromosómico para Andropogon sp. y A. glaucophyllus. El análisis embriológico indica que las cuatro especies forman sacos embrionarios del tipo Polygonum var. Poaceae, reproduciéndose sexualmente. Los arreglos florales varían ligeramente: A. glaziovii y A. arenarius son principalmente andromonoicas s (h) + p(m) o hermafroditas s (h) + p (o). Andropogon arenarius y A. glaziovii son autocompatibles y se sugiere la autogamia como su sistema de polinización. Andropogon sp. y A. glaucophyllus poseen espiguillas sésiles y pediceladas con flores hermafroditas, lo que hace al par homógamo s (h) + p (h), pero a menudo ocurre la pérdida de función femenina en la espiguilla pedicelada, dando un arreglo s (h) + p (m). Andropogon sp. y A. glaucophyllus comparten un sistema de auto incompatibilidad polen-pistilo que asegura la polinización cruzada.Chromosome numbers and reproductive biology of four hexaploid (2n = 6x = 60) South American species of the grass genus Andropogon are reported in this paper. Studied species belong to the sect. Leptopogon Stapf (A. glaziovii Hack. and A. arenarius Hack.) and Notosolen Stapf (Andropogon sp. and A. glaucophyllus Roseng., B. R. Arrill. & Izag.). This is the first report on chromosome number for Andropogon sp. and A. glaucophyllus. Embriological survey shows that these four species form embryo sacs of the Polygonum var. Poaceae type, thus reproducing sexually. Floral arrays vary slightly: A. glaziovii and A. arenarius are primarily andromonoecious s (h) + p(m) or hermaphrodite s (h) + p (o), due to loss of male function in the pedicellate spikelet. Andropogon arenarius and A. glaziovii are self compatible and self pollination is suggested as their main mating system. Andropogon sp. and A. glaucophyllus have mostly hermaphrodite flowers, since pedicellated spikelets maintain the female function making the pair homogamous s (h) + p (h), but often there is a loss of female function in pedicellated spikelet making the array andromonoecious s (h) + p (m). Andropogon sp. and A. glaucophyllus share a self incompatibility system that ensures obligate cross pollination.Fil: Norrmann, Guillermo Alberto.
