Día a día, hombres y mujeres se desenvuelven en ambientes en los que predomina la iluminación artificial de bajo consumo. Para contrarrestar esta situación, es posible utilizar sistemas de iluminación natural para el ingreso de luz natural a los espacios interiores. Sin embargo, existe aún una gran dificultad para hallar datos de rendimiento lumínico de estos sistemas, lo que genera incertidumbre entre arquitectos y proyectistas al momento de planificar la iluminación de espacios utilizando estos dispositivos.
