The aim of this work is to emphasize the central role of surface chemistry as a determining factor during the process of bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on metals. Experimental results showing the influence of the presence and composition of an oxide layer, the pH, and the ionic strength of the solution on bacterial adhesion are reviewed and discussed. Indeed, after a biofilm has been established, the modification of surface chemistry as a result of bacterial activity is considered as a key variable influencing the corrosion process.Fil: Busalmen, Juan Pablo.
