The aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is well described as the mediator of toxicological responses to environmental contaminants such as 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD). Following binding of ligand, the AhR translocates from the cytoplasm to the nucleus and binds to the dioxin response-element (DRE), thereby activating a battery of genes coding for phase I and II detoxification pathways. Recent efforts have been focused on elucidating the endogenous roles for this ubiquitously expressed receptor/transcription factor.
