Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease. It affects more than 5 million people worldwide, yet no disease modifying treatment is available for patients. In 5-10 % of the cases, PD is inherited in a typical Mendelian manner. It is through the study of the hereditary forms that we have improved our understanding of the disease.Mutations in the PARK2 or PINK1 genes are the leading causes of the autosomal recessive form of PD.
