Biomineralization in skeletal tissues is a cell- and protein-mediated process involving the production of an appropriate extracellular matrix (predominantly fibrillar type 1 collagen) that is hardened (mineralized) by hydroxyapatite crystals. This process is controlled by molecular determinants that regulate crystal deposition and crystal growth.
