This paper deals with the design process of an FPGA-based development board for educational purposes, as a replacement of the obsolete Spartan-3 Starter Kit Board. Theoretical part describes the basic principles behind FPGAs and compatible digital and analog interfaces. The next chapter focuses on choosing optimal components for the board, mainly an optimal FPGA, in regard to course compatibility, implementation requirements and price. A complete circuit diagram is then designed based on the components as well as a printed circuit board layout. To simplify the process of configuration, a minimalistic Windows application using iMPACT batch commands is programmed.
