We describe the introduction of a Computer-aided Software Engineering (CASE) tool at first, second and graduate diploma level in a Systems Analysis and Design unit, to support the teaching of the structured analysis methodology. CASE tools are widely used in industry, therefore student exposure to these tools is needed in university computing curricula as long as student learning is not adversely affected by the use of such tools. This paper presents results of an empirical study to determine whether there were any significant differences in the results obtained for different groups of students that used the tool, but also to determine any differences between males and females within each group, given that in all groups there were more male...
