La imagen de la mujer madura y su ingrata representación en los textos literarios

The aim of this article is to examine the representations of mature and/or old women within the sphere of Spanish literature from the Middle Ages to the XX th century, revising works which enjoyed a considerable diffusion in their days. This investigation allows us to provide evidence of the fact that the parts played by this type of character are usually, in the large majority of cases, full of negative connotations. This phenomenon can be explained by the fear that the figure of the wise and intelligent woman causes to the masculine imaginary, a fear which has led to the pejorative treatment of these characters, or to their denigration.El objetivo de este artículo es examinar las representaciones de mujeres maduras y/o viejas en el ámbito de la literatura española a partir del medioevo y hasta el siglo XX, a través de la revisión de obras que contaron con una importante difusión en su época. Esta indagación permite evidenciar que los papeles desempeñados por este tipo de personaje suelen estar cargados, en la gran mayoría de los casos, de connotaciones negativas. Este fenómeno encuentra su explicación en el temor que causa en el imaginario masculino la figura de la mujer sabia e inteligente, temor que se traduce en el trato peyorativo hacia estos personajes, o bien en su denigración
