L’evolució del coneixement del valencià en dues dècades: els censos lingüístics del 1991 al 2011

The aim of this paper is to analyse the linguistic data related to the Valencian language from the census of 2011 and to compare these results with data from previous censuses, particularly that of 2001. The interest of this analysis lies in the dissemination of data that has not been published elsewhere. The first part of the article portrays the demographic population of the Valencian Country and the second part examines the language census. The overall results show that 85% of the population of the Valencian Country aged 3 and over is able to understand the language and about half of the population is able to speak it; these levels are very similar to those found 20 years ago. In relation to formal skills, the literacy of the Valencian population continues to grow at a good pace. The results broken down by the demographic variables of age, place of birth and region of residence show important differences in both the level of knowledge of Valencian and its evolution. The section on the analysis of the territory reveals that there is a particular evolution of the knowledge of Valencian in some of the Valencian-speaking regions: Baix Maestrat, Costera, Comtat, Horta Oest and Ports. We attempt to find an explanation to these irregularities in demography and conclude by expressing suspicions about the reliability of the data from the census of 2011.Keywords: language census; demolinguistics; knowledge of Valencian; Valencian Country.L’objectiu d’aquest article és analitzar les dades lingüístiques del Cens de l’any 2011 referents al valencià i comparar els resultats amb les dades dels censos anteriors, particularment el de l’any 2001. L’interès d’aquestes anàlisis resideix en la difusió d’unes dades que no han suscitat cap mena de publicació. En la primera part de l’article es retrata demogràficament la població del País Valencià i en la segona s’analitza el Cens lingüístic. Els resultats generals mostren que el 85% de la població del País Valencià  de 3 anys i més es capaç d’entendre el valencià i aproximadament la meitat de parlar-lo, nivells molt semblants als de fa 20 anys. En relació amb les capacitats formals, l’alfabetització de la població en valencià continua augmentant a bon ritme. Els resultats desagregats per les variables sociodemogràfiques de l’edat, el lloc de naixement i la comarca de residència mostren diferències importants tant en els nivells de coneixement del valencià com en la seua evolució. L’apartat dedicat a l’anàlisi territorial descobreix comarques de la zona valencianoparlant que presenten una evolució particular del coneixement del valencià: el Baix Maestrat, la Costera, el Comtat, l’Horta Oest i els Ports. Recorrem a la demografia per intentar trobar una explicació a aquestes irregularitats i concloem expressant les nostres sospites sobre la fiabilitat de les dades del Cens de població 2011. Paraules clau: cens lingüístic; demolingüística; coneixement del valencià; País Valencià
