Faust and Prometheus: notes for an ethics of human cloning

Tant el clonatge terapèutic com el reproductiu generen en el si de la ciutadania i de la comunitat científica un debat polaritzat. Cal abundar en la idea que el clonatge produeix una còpia genètica, no una «fotocòpia» idèntica del subjecte, atès que la còpia d’una persona no és, per raons òbvies, el mateix individu. Tampoc no es pot clonar la voluntat de llibertat, ni la consciència personal construïda amb experiències íntimes i intransferibles que ofereixen com a resultat identitats clarament diferents. Actualment, els mites de Faust i Prometeu s’estan fent una realitat i això produeix en els éssers humans un vertigen existencial de magnituds no observades fins al present. Malgrat la prohibició, i davant el que sembla un fet ineludible com és el fet que el clonatge reproductiu humà serà una realitat més aviat o més tard, hauríem de començar a reformular estàndards per poder prendre decisions moralment defensables al voltant d’aquesta nova possibilitat científica. Els éssers humans des de sempre hem intervingut en la naturalesa amb les nostres eines i tecnologies, amb la nostra techné. També hem inventat instruments conceptuals o inteŀlectuals amb l’objectiu principal de sobreviure mitjançant l’adaptació de la realitat a les nostres necessitats vitals. La creació de comitès d’ètica reproductiva podria representar una potent eina deliberativa i reguladora pel que fa a l’abordatge del clonatge reproductiu humà, analitzant amb rigor, i cas per cas, cadascuna de les soŀlicituds per posar l’ètica al servei de la genètica. El temor real que determinades ments narcisistes puguin fer un mal ús del clonatge per satisfer raons fosques de les seves personalitats malaltisses d’egocentrisme o per complaure’s en el seu domini sobre la resta d’individus haurà de presidir la presa de decisions. Un altre problema important dins d’aquest context és que el clonatge humà reproductiu haurà d’alterar necessàriament la relació bàsica entre la persona clonada i el seu «pare» (o «mare») antecessor genètic. Això deixa en l’aire un seguit de preguntes sobre els models tradicionals de paternitat i de família. Què voldrà dir ser pare o mare? Què haurem de considerar com a família? Quin serà el propòsit de tenir fills?Paraules clau: ètica del clonatge, estatut ontològic de l’embrió, comitè d’ètica reproductiva, ectogènesi, maternitat subrogada.Both therapeutic and reproductive cloning raise a polarized debate among citizens and the scientific community. We have to stress the idea that cloning produces a copy of a gene, not a photocopy, since a copy of a person is not the same human being. Nor can we clone the desire for freedom or the personal conscience built with untransferable intimate experiences, creating different identities as a result. The myths of Faust and Prometheus are becoming a reality and this causes a vertigo of existential magnitudes never observed before in human beings. In spite of the prohibition and given the irremediable fact of reproductive cloning, we should begin to formulate standards to be able to take morally defensible decisions about this new and inevitable scientific possibility. We humans have always intervened in nature with our tools and technologies, with our techné. We have also invented conceptual or intellectual tools. The creation of binding committees on reproductive ethics could represent a powerful deliberative and regulating tool in the approach to cloning, analyzing every application with rigor and on a case-by-case basis in order to use ethics in the service of genetics. The real fear that certain narcissistic personalities may misuse cloning to flatter their sick egocentric personalities or to wield power over others must be present in the decision-making process. Likewise, another important problem is that human cloning alters the basic relationship between the cloned person and his or her genetic ancestor (father or mother). This leaves lots of questions unanswered and it challenges the traditional models of parenthood: What does it mean to be a father? What is a family?
