This chapter provides an overview of the active or pre‐functional phase of tooth eruption, with morphological and chronological descriptions of alveolar and partial eruption levels. Methods of measurement are described, with several longitudinal studies providing evidence that eruption occurs during early root stage formation and that the rate is rapid and decreases with time. Clinical eruption is also described including sequence polymorphisms, age, and root stage
