This qualitative study explored the responses and strategies used by children ages two to five when prompted about numbers and numerals. This study, based on a socio-constructivist framework, was intended to facilitate discussion among early childhood educators and to challenge current mathematical practices in early childhood education.The children participated in a whole class session and in an individual session which were videotaped. The whole class session involved all children from each age group: a 2-year-old class; a 3-year-old class; a 4 year old class, and a 5 year old class).
