Sudies of the Thermal State of the Earth. The First Paper: Preliminary Report of Terrestrial Heat Flow in Japan

Determination of terrestrial heat flow in Japan has been attempted for the first time. Geothermal gradient, uncorrected, in the Sasago tunnel, Yamanasi Prefecture, central Japan, is 2.°71C/100m and the mean thermal conductivity of the rocks penetrated by the tunnel is 7.61×10-3 call/cm2 sec℃, giving the amount of heat flow of 2.06×10-6 cal/cm2 sec. This and a few other preliminary results indicate that heat flow in Japan is greater than the global average determined so far, i.e. 1.2×10-6 cal/cm2 sec. It seems, however, in spite of the active seismicity and volcanism of the Japanese Islands, unlikely that the order of magnitude of heat flow is different from the global average, except in areas close to active volcanoes.本邦に於いては,地殻内熱流量についての研究が全くなされていないので,今回これを試みた.地球内部からの熟エネルギーが,あらゆる地殻内の現象のエネルギー源であることから考えれば,本邦の如き地震,火山活動の活潑な地域での熱流量を知ることは重要なことである.まだ序報の段階であるが,得られた結果は次の如くである.本邦といえども火山の極く近傍以外の場所での熱流量は,世界各地で従来測定された値と同じく,10-6cal/sec cm2の桁である.しかし,本報の結果によれば,本邦での値はやや大きいようである.以後測定の数および精度を増して行く予定である
