Determination of terrestrial heat flow in Japan has been attempted for the first time. Geothermal gradient, uncorrected, in the Sasago tunnel, Yamanasi Prefecture, central Japan, is 2.°71C/100m and the mean thermal conductivity of the rocks penetrated by the tunnel is 7.61×10-3 call/cm2 sec℃, giving the amount of heat flow of 2.06×10-6 cal/cm2 sec. This and a few other preliminary results indicate that heat flow in Japan is greater than the global average determined so far, i.e. 1.2×10-6 cal/cm2 sec.
