Spatial distribution of interplate coupling in a subduction zone at the northern end of the Philippine Sea plate, the South Kanto region, is deduced by geodetic inversion of continuous GPS data. Interplate coupling is expressed by SAVAGE'S (1983) back-slip model. The back-slip is a virtual fault slip on the plate boundary representing a degree of interplate coupling. Daily coordinates at continuous GPS sites during the year 1997 are used to estimate horizontal crustal displacement rates, which are inverted into back-slip distribution on the plate boundary snrfarfi
