Fruit quality and phenological development of blackberry (Rubus spp) submitted to different seasons and intensities of pruning

Blackberry is a growing crop species in Brazil, and with great prospects for growth. The practice of pruning in most temperate fruits has a great influence on their development and production. The experiment was conducted in the 2016/17 crop, in the municipality of Morro Redondo, RS, with the objective of identifying the best branch for the evaluation of phenology and the influence of different seasons and intensities of pruning in the cycle duration and in the thermal accumulation of the crop, besides the influence of this management on the production and quality of the fruits. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design, with five replications consisting of six plants, in a 3x2 factorial scheme, with three pruning seasons (18/07, 10/08 and 01/09) and two pruning intensities of the secondary branches, characterized by the size of 15 cm and 30 cm. Phenology was evaluated in the first and last branch of the main stem, through visual observations at the following moments: bud budding, flower bud formation, fully open flower, green berry, rose berry, red berry, mature berry and end of harvest . Productivity per plant (kg -1), estimated yield (kg ha-1), number of fruits per plant, fresh mass (g) , dry mass (g) and leaf area index (LAI). Phenology of 'Tupy' mulberry was directly influenced by the pruning season, where the delay of the pruning resulted in a reduction of the period between pruning and the formation of the floral bud, in addition to a reduction in the duration of the crop cycle. Through this management it was also possible to delay the beginning of the harvest in up to 15 days. The thermal accumulation was different between the pruning seasons, the plants pruned in July presented the highest values with 852.43 ºC day, and the lowest value was found in the plants that received the pruning in August, 795.06 ºC day. The different intensities of pruning did not modify the crop cycle, and the phenology was similar in different branch heights. The fruit length and soluble solids variables were directly affected by the pruning season, with a reduction in length and soluble solids content, depending on the delay. Fruit diameter, mean fruit mass and yield per harvest were influenced by pruning intensity, where the highest values for short pruning were observed. The number of fruits, total production and production estimates did not show significant interaction with any of the evaluated factors. A prática da poda na maioria das frutíferas de clima temperado tem grande influência no seu desenvolvimento e produção. O experimento foi conduzido na safra 2016/17, no município de Morro Redondo, RS, com objetivos de identificar o melhor ramo para avaliação da fenologia e a influência das diferentes épocas e intensidades de poda na duração do ciclo e no acúmulo térmico da cultura, além da influência deste manejo na produção e qualidade dos frutos. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi em blocos casualizados, com cinco repetições constituídas por seis plantas, em esquema fatorial 3x2, com três épocas de poda (18/07, 10/08 e 01/09) e duas intensidades de poda dos ramos secundários, caracterizadas pelo tamanho de 15 cm e 30 cm. A fenologia foi avaliada no primeiro e último ramo da haste principal, por meio de observações visuais nos seguintes momentos: início da brotação, formação do botão floral, flor completamente aberta, baga verde, baga-rosa, baga vermelha, baga madura e fim da colheita. Foram avaliados comprimento (mm) e diâmetro de frutos (mm), sólidos solúveis (ºBrix), produção por planta (Kg pl-1), produtividade estimada (Kg ha-1), número de frutos por planta, massa fresca (g), massa seca (g) e índice de área foliar (IAF). A fenologia da amora ‘Tupy’ foi diretamente influenciado pela época de poda, onde o atraso da mesma resultou em uma redução do período entre poda e a formação do botão floral, além de uma redução na duração do ciclo da cultura. Por meio deste manejo também foi possível postergar o início da colheita em até 15 dias. O acúmulo térmico foi diferente entre as épocas de poda, as plantas podadas em julho apresentaram os maiores valores com 852,43 ºC dia, já o menor valor foi encontrado nas plantas que receberam a poda em agosto, 795,06 ºC dia. As diferentes intensidades de poda não modificaram o ciclo da cultura, e a fenologia foi semelhante nas diferentes alturas de ramo. As variáveis comprimento de frutos e sólidos solúveis foram diretamente afetadas pela época de poda, ocorrendo uma redução no comprimento e no teor de sólidos solúveis conforme o atraso da mesma. O diâmetro dos frutos, massa média dos frutos e a produção por colheita foram influenciadas pela intensidade de poda, onde se observa os maiores valores para poda curta. O número de frutos, produção total e estimativa de produção não apresentaram interação significativa com nenhum dos fatores avaliados.
