Severe or critical illness refers to the range of life-threatening clinical or surgical conditions that most often require hospitalization in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). After an aggression, several metabolic and hormonal changes occur in order to maintain the body's homeostasis. This condition usually causes, among other effects, insulin resistance and protein catabolism, placing the patient at significant nutritional risk.
