Among modified theories of gravitation, f (R) theories are possibly the most straightforward and “natural” purely geometric extension of GR. The first appearance of modified gravity theories dates back to the 1920’s [1, 2], although their relevance and popularity vastly increased about 40 years ago, when pioneering works [3–5] showed the possibility of generating the early inflationary period with quadratic theories, which arise naturally from quantum corrections in curved spacetime.
