The "Mission civilisatrice" practiced by the French authority created native intellectuals able to express themselves through the vehicle of the French language. Some of these intellectuals were instrumental in developing a new literary genre: Algerian literature of French expression. Through this literature the authors gave a voice to the illiterate masses of Algeria in the struggle for liberation from French colonial rule.
