The results of reversed cyclic load tests on two full-scale exterior beam-column connections designed and detailed according to the 1984 Canadian concrete code are presented. These test specimens included a slab together with a spandrel beam and were designed for two different levels of ductility, K = 1.3 and K = 0.1. The role of the slab and the role of the spandrel beam are investigated. It is demonstrated how the spandrel beam limits the effective width of the slab and how it affects the shear in the joint region between the main beam and the column.
