The Influence of Acid Rain on the Engineering Properties of a Sensitive Clay

Acid rain has received a considerable attention in the past decade, following numerous studies linking the emissions of the oxides of sulfur and nitrogen with the profound environmental deterioration. Recognizing the seriousness with which this issue is currently dealt with, this thesis attempts to shed some light on the subject of potential long term alterations in the engineering properties of a bonded, sensitive clay, undergoing leaching by the acid rain. A simulation of the acid rain action is conducted on a group of natural soil samples, representative of a sensitive clay. The results seem to indicate -that the clay soil exhibits a substantial immunity from the influence of dilute solutions of a sulfuric acid.Les études sur les pluies acides sensibilisent de plus en plus les gens à la gravité de ce problème. Les résultats de la majorité de ces recherches révèlent un lien entre la détérioration environnementale et les émissions d’oxydes de sulfure et de nitrogène. Reconnaissant la gravité de ce problème, cette thèse tente d’explorer les altérations que peuvent subir l’argile naturelle attaquée par les pluies polluées. Les tests de simulation de l’effet des pluies acides sur les sois naturels, représentatives d’une argile sensible, ont été conduits.
