The data upon which the price indexes presented here are based are drawn largely --for the 1850-1866 period-- from the Trade and Navigation Reports of the Province of Canada --the Quebec and Ontario of today-- while for the 1867-1890 period, data are taken from Canada's Trade and Navigation Reports. These last reports are found in the Canadian Parliamentary Sessional Papers. These data are supplemented with the United States Commerce and Navigation Reports' statistics on imports from Canada and with the price data found in H. Michell's "A Survey of Prices in Canada from 1884", drawn mainly from Toronto newspapers. […
