The kinematic behaviour of robots, an important subset of multibody systems, is described by highly nonlinear equations. Due to the 3-D movements and nonlinearities of the connections, simulation and optimization software has to be developed for analyses. Currently available software restricts the user to use simple connections. Some advanced tools are presented for modelling the kinematics of multibody systems with arbitrary connections. Both the simulation and optimization problems are formulated and attention is paid to appropriate numerical solver
