Critical Success Factors in Sustainable Office Development in the Netherlands.

Commercial buildings are responsible for large percentage of the global emission of greenhouse. The development of sustainable offices is being driven by ecological and political motifs as well as by economical and social arguments. Despite all efforts to encourage it, sustainable office development is still far from being main stream business. The success of a sustainable office development can be influenced by critical success factors at project level. The critical success factor of a construction project has gained a considerable attention the last three decades and has extensively been studied by researchers. However, studies on the critical success factors for sustainable offices development are hardly mentioned. This paper reveals the importance of 23 project critical success factors. This result is based on face to face interviews and an online multiple choice questionnaire. The factors that have been considered to be very important are: ‘commitment to sustainability by the involved persons’, ‘willingness to invest in sustainability by the user’, ‘focus on long term value creation by the stakeholders’, ‘early involvement of all stakeholders’, and ‘clearly defined sustainability goals’.
